Digital library and self-service kiosk system built specifically for the Informatics Engineering study program at Universitas Malikussaleh.
What it does
The platform handles the full lifecycle of an academic library — collection browsing, loan management, return tracking, and reporting. A self-service kiosk mode lets students borrow and return books without staff assistance.
Stack decisions
Laravel 13 + Inertia.js + React — server-side routing with a reactive frontend, no separate API layer needed. Page transitions feel instant because Inertia handles navigation client-side.
Filament v5 for the admin panel. Writing a custom CRUD dashboard from scratch is a solved problem; Filament handles it in a fraction of the code.
MySQL as the only database. PostgreSQL was considered but MySQL fits the shared hosting environment at the university and avoids operational complexity for a non-technical admin team.
Notable details
- Book cover images are stored and served from the application server, not a third-party CDN, to ensure availability on the university’s internal network.
- The loan system enforces due dates via a scheduled job that runs daily and flags overdue items automatically.
- Role-based access: student, librarian, and admin each see a different interface.
